Art Nouveau Butterfly Brooch

A very rare Art Nouveau Butterfly Brooch. The body of the butterfly is set with diamonds and a fire opal. The head has intricate gold antennas. The wings are enameled with beautiful pastel plique-de-jour.

Two cabochon rubies are set along the bottoms of the wings. The border of the wings are decorated with diamonds.

The French word plique-a-jour translates to “letting in daylight”, which is an enameling method that was used dating back to 6th century AD. This technique could take up to a few months to finish and is a very difficult and arduous process. During the Art Nouveau period, the French revived the plique-a-jour technique, and this butterfly brooch is a stunning example of the fine French craftsmanship produced in that era.

These earrings are the finest example of Art Nouveau, French, antique, circa 1900.
