Rare Tiffany Donald Claflin Brooch

11339

Famed for his whimsy and imagination, Donald Claflin was a great 20th century innovator in jewelry design. Each of his expressive pieces had a special appeal for those who craved fine jewelry as unique as themselves.

Hailing from Massachusetts and eschewing his work in textiles, Donald Claflin first set his imagination free at the jewelry house of Van Cleef and Arpels. Later he would partner with Tiffany & Co. to craft this rare Tiffany ‘Humpty Dumpty’ brooch.

Like many of Claflin’s bold creations throughout the years, Claflin employed a host of unorthodox materials to create pieces that remain unparalleled to this day. The whimsical storybook creature featured in this unique brooch is infamous for his capacity to rile up the King's horses and his men.

Humpty Dumpty is made from gold, and has a collar and headpiece studded with diamonds. This rare piece, circa 1960, signifies an era of style and imagination that combined the past with the visionary methods of the future.
